3 Simple But Effective Video Wall Design Hacks

Digital signage continually increases in popularity year after year. Unlike static signs, video walls allow for a broader range of features.

It’s easy to think of video walls as an extension of digital signage as a concept. A video wall combines multiple television screens, video projectors or computer monitors to form one large-sized screen or image.

However, this multi-unit display does require more planning when it comes to designing images and content that will work across all of the screens. Here are a few simple but effective video wall design tips:

Design with Distance in Mind

The location of your video wall installation will be an essential part of any project. Placement is crucial and is often dependent on the type of use. Consider foot traffic, viewing impact and overall aesthetic. The most effective video wall designs will take advantage of a bigger space, meaning the viewer will need to be farther away for the best perspective.

Look at how much space is actually needed for the entire system, and how it will affect that chosen space. While video walls should catch the eye and engage, they shouldn’t dominate and overwhelm.

Check out our Screen Guide for more tips on designing for distance.

Curate the Correct Content for your Displays

It’s not always as simple as throwing a bunch of images and streaming videos, it’s about curating content that speaks to the consumer. Content should be displayed at correct resolutions and ratios, and placement of images will differ depending on whether they are motion graphics, still images or a combination.

The best picture quality should match your screens’ native resolutions. For TVs, this could be 720p or 1080p. For monitors, various resolutions are acceptable, such as 1366 x 768 pixels or 1920 x 1080 pixels. Also determine the source and type of video images used, such as Blu-Ray, DVD, cable/satellite TV or digital video files from a hard drive.

Having a flashy 4K display set-up won’t be nearly as impactful or attractive if the content does not match the resolution!

Shine a Light on the Issue

One important thing to consider is lighting, and to some degree this comes in when you’re initially designing the video wall and selecting displays. Look for zero bezel displays that are also designed to have a high brightness level and a matte finish to them, so lighting conditions are flexible and do not present an issue.

Glare from other light sources in your space can negatively impact the presentation of the video wall and dim the content you’re trying to display. Be sure to test darker content like photos and videos thoroughly to ensure your video wall design is visible to all.
